Chapter Ten

Dante struggled with the dismay trying to gain the upper hand as he and Galen were separated from Claire and her sister during transport from the prison to the landing field at the spaceport where the celebration was centered. There had been no way to work out a very detailed plan when there were so many gaps in their knowledge of the circumstances they would have to deal with or even the lay of the land.

They had not even had a clue that the main focus of the celebration would be at the spaceport, although he had thought it was likely due to the fact that their city was not laid out to accommodate the gathering of very large groups. The city was connected with a spider web of roads and walks, but, beyond allowing a free flow of traffic to efficiently connect all points of the city, the intention had been to make large assemblies for the purpose of protests impossible.

Every road and walkway could be glutted with angry protestors and they still would not be able to create the sort of havoc the government found disruptive and disturbing.

But that also meant that there were few areas to choose from where they could allow a large gathering for any purpose at all.

So he was not greatly surprised to find out that the spaceport was their destination. He was pleased, though, since that was actually helpful considering they would have quicker access to a ship and therefore improved chances of actually pulling off an escape.

The dismay he was struggling with was that they were separated from Claire and Maddie.

He hadn’t expected that when Claire was his mate and they were well aware of that fact. It stunned him that they did, particularly in light of the fact that they were condemned.

And he had the uneasy feeling that they would hold Claire hostage to his good behavior.

He had the feeling a disaster of epic proportions was unfolding before his eyes and that he was helpless to prevent it.

The time to panic, he told himself, was if they settled Claire so far removed from him and Galen that they were prevented from connecting—not now. Not when he needed his wits about him.

It was something of a relief when they were escorted to a balcony to observe the proceedings even though he had a bad feeling the idea was not to give them a better view but rather to make it possible for the people below them to have an unobstructed view of what was planned for them.

He regretted that he had not had the opportunity to say goodbye to Claire as he had wished—just in case things went badly.

But he understood better why the government had decided to ignore all evidence to the contrary and hold them responsible for the breach of the Treaty of Hilbradease.

Everyone wanted blood. Peace had been shattered for the first time in generations. The entire confederation was in an uproar and the people were frightened and uncertain of the future.
